Statistics

  • Every 42 seconds Someone attempts suicide.
  • Every 18 minutes Someone takes his or her own life.
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people 15 to 24.
  • Every 90 minutes a Senior citizen takes his or her own life.
  • Five times as many men than women take their own life.

In 2005

  • In the United States, over 35,000 people took their own life. That is as if 116 Boeing 747s went down an killed everyone on board...we would be outraged!
  • Over 700,000 people attempted suicide
  • In the world, over 1 million people people took their own lives.
  • It is estimated that there are 20 or more attempts per each completed suicide...so 20 million people attempted suicide.

When someone attempts suicide and are “unsuccessful” we call that a failed attempt...how can that be a failure?

How many of those people made a second choice?

We don't know...because we don't acknowledge it.

Imagine the difference we could make if we did!

*Currently there is no data for how many of those attempts were actually people who sought out help and made a second choice and those who were found, interrupted or unsuccessful in there attempt. The goal of Power of the Second Choice is to have the two separated and acknowledgment of all people who made a second choice.
